Preserving History: The Renovation of the George Hotel & Estate Building
We partnered with Everlast Scaffolding and Kirklees Council to undertake a captivating aerial photography project, focusing on the renovation work being carried out at the George Hotel & Estate Building in Huddersfield. Our primary concern throughout the endeavor was ensuring the safety and well-being of all involved.
Project Overview
Situated in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, England, the George Hotel holds great historical significance as the birthplace of rugby league football in 1895. This iconic Grade II listed building, originally constructed in 1851 and boasting a 60-bed hotel, is now undergoing a remarkable transformation into a Radisson Red hotel, with its anticipated opening scheduled for November 2024.
Capturing the Renovation Process
As part of our role, we diligently captured the progress of the restoration work on the Estate Building, an architectural gem initially designed by the renowned William Henry Crossland in 1874. Our aerial photography aimed to document the intricate details and significant milestones of the renovation process, highlighting the careful restoration of this historic structure.
Technical and Safety Challenges
Conducting aerial photography in such a historically and architecturally significant area required meticulous planning and adherence to stringent safety protocols. Some of the measures we implemented included:
Collaborating closely with Everlast Scaffolding to ensure safe drone operations around the scaffolding structures.
Coordinating with Kirklees Council to secure necessary permissions and comply with local regulations.
Conducting thorough site assessments and risk evaluations to ensure the safety of our crew and the public.
Documenting Progress
Using our DJI Mini 3 Pro, we captured stunning aerial footage and photographs of the renovation work. The visuals showcased the ongoing transformation, from the scaffolding setup to the intricate restoration of the building's facade. Our aim was to provide a comprehensive visual record that could be used to monitor progress, share updates with stakeholders, and celebrate the restoration efforts.
Collaboration and Impact
Our collaboration with Everlast Scaffolding and Kirklees Council was instrumental in the success of this project. Their expertise and support enabled us to operate efficiently and safely, ensuring that our aerial photography did not interfere with the restoration work. The resulting visuals not only documented the progress but also highlighted the dedication and skill involved in preserving this historic landmark.
Looking Ahead
The repair and restoration efforts on the Estate Building are expected to be completed by autumn 2023, and we are privileged to be part of this transformative journey. As the George Hotel is set to reopen as a Radisson Red hotel in November 2024, we eagerly anticipate documenting the final stages of this remarkable renovation.
